Shadowing (on-the-job observation of a professional) is considered to be an important part of the career decision-making process. Experiencing a career in a real-world health care setting can be invaluable. College health career programs strongly encourage students to engage in some sort of shadowing and/or volunteer experience before they apply to a post-secondary program. Summer time or school holiday breaks are ideal times to do shadowing. Also, be sure to document any time for verification later.

The BlueRidge AHEC Shadowing Programs are designed to provide individuals with in-depth experiences with actual health care professionals.

To be considered, one must:

• Complete Shadowing Request Form.
• Complete the participating health care facility’s orientation paperwork.
• Complete a Career Counseling session.
