Shadowing (on-the-job observation of a professional) is considered to be an important part of the career decision-making process. Experiencing a career in a real-world health care setting can be invaluable. College health career programs strongly encourage students to engage in some sort of shadowing and/or volunteer experience before they apply to a post-secondary program. Summer time or school holiday breaks are ideal times to do shadowing. Also, be sure to document any time for verification later. Download the form to use here:

The BlueRidge AHEC Shadowing Programs are designed to provide individuals with in-depth experiences with actual health care professionals.
To be considered, one must:
- Complete Shadowing Request Form.
- Complete the participating health care facility’s orientation paperwork.
- Complete a Career Counseling session.
