Highlights from 2003-2004
Partnered with Floyd Medical Center and the Boy Scouts of America to establish a Medical
Explorers Program. This opportunity is available for young people between the ages of 14 (and
finished with 8th grade) and 20 who are interested in learning more about various medical careers.
Continued the Healthcare Science Technology Education (formerly Health Occupations) Industry
Certification Evaluations at Georgia high schools. The Industry Certification Process began as a
joint initiative between the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Statewide AHEC
Network. To date, 52 instructors from 44 programs have the distinction of being “Industry
Certified”.
Conducted a specialized program for elementary school students entitled “The Great Hospital
Adventure”. This initiative is a puppet show that includes a video that tells a story about how
health care professionals care for a little boy.
Partnered with the Georgia Access to Dental Services (GADS) Pilot Project. The GADS
collaborative focus is to promote preventive oral care and access and reduce oral health disparities.
Continued the Spring Program of Health Careers Education at the Cedartown Boys and Girls
Club, visits to local DOL Career Centers and conduct periodic workshops, and to recruit applicants
for the three Physician Assistant programs in Georgia.
Provided training and support to health professionals and their staff in medical information access
using the Internet, Clinical Resources Online: Introduction for Beginners, and Medical Resources
on the Internet.
Developed a parent’s guide for exploring health careers with their child called “So Your Child Wants
To Be A Doctor Or Other Health Care Professional?” This guide was translated into Spanish and put
onto a CD-Rom.
